Imhotep later steals Anck-su-namun's corpse and takes her to the City of the Dead, Hamunaptra. He attempts to resurrect her using the forbidden black . Just as the ritual is almost complete, the Medjai raid the city. Imhotep is captured. As punishment for his sacrilege, he is sentenced to the "Hom-Dai"—a curse that involves being mummified alive inside a sarcophagus with flesh-eating scarabs. Here is the full story summary of the 1999 film : The Prologue (1290 B.C.) The story begins in ancient Thebes, Egypt. Imhotep is the High Priest of Osiris and holds great power. He is having a secret affair with Anck-su-namun , the mistress of Pharaoh Seti I. When the Pharaoh discovers their betrayal, Anck-su-namun kills him. Upon arriving at Hamunaptra, both groups are attacked by the Medjai, led by , who try to scare them away to prevent the curse from being unleashed. They fail, and the groups dig into the ruins. Awakening the Mummy Evie discovers the Book of the Dead. She is fascinated by it. Meanwhile, the Americans find a chest containing canopic jars and the mummified remains of Imhotep. When the Americans open the chest, they trigger a curse.
