He is, by design, a despicable human being: he is a racist, sexist, chauvinistic, lazy, manipulative, and utterly incompetent glutton. The story kicks off when Torrente investigates a Chinese restaurant next door, suspecting them of selling cat meat. In the process, he uncovers a drug trafficking ring. The climax is a chaotic shootout in a supermarket, a scene that perfectly blends slapstick comedy with graphic violence, cementing the film's unique tone. The success of the film rests entirely on Santiago Segura's performance. He manages to make a truly horrible person watchable. There is a bizarre, pathetic charm to Torrente. We don't root for him to succeed in being a hero, but we are fascinated by his delusions of grandeur. He is a walking satire of the "tough guy" cop trope (think Dirty Harry or Lethal Weapon ), but stripped of all competence and morality.

Now, he wanders the streets of Madrid as a self-appointed vigilante, armed with a badge he shouldn't have and a deep-seated inferiority complex.
The brilliance of the film lies in the relationships Torrente builds. He creates a "special patrol" out of these social outcasts. However, Torrente treats his team with absolute disdain, using them for his own benefit while the group (mostly) views him as a legitimate authority figure.
