Inspired by true events, the film tells the story of Keshav (Akshay Kumar), a simple man from a rural village in India, and Jaya (Bhumi Pednekar), an educated woman he falls in love with. After a whirlwind romance and marriage, Jaya discovers the harsh reality of Keshav’s household: there is no toilet. Due to his father’s orthodox religious beliefs, the family believes a toilet inside the house is impure. Jaya, refusing to suffer the indignity of the "lota party" (women who defecate in open fields at dawn), leaves her husband.
