That night, the developer dies in his penthouse. Security footage (which glitches horrifically, a staple of modern horror) shows him choking on soil and river water, drowning on dry land. The local police rule it a seizure, but the town elders know the truth: She is back.
Thorne tracks Elara to the ruins of her cottage in the center of the blasted forest. A spectral storm rages around him. He confronts her, gun drawn, but he realizes she isn't the true villain.
"You were wronged," Thorne shouts over the howling wind. "But if you kill them all, you become what they said you were. Be the judge, not the executioner."
The remaining Council members arrive, armed with ancient relics to re-bind her. A chaotic battle ensues. Thorne is forced to choose sides. He sees the Council attempting to sacrifice Maya (the archivist) to power their spell.
"I am not the evil here, Detective," she says, her voice echoing as if two people are speaking at once (the duality of her nature). "I am the consequence."
Elara was a healer in 1724. When the Council's children fell ill from a poisoned well, they blamed her. They burned her alive, but not before she cursed their bloodlines: "Fire took my breath, so water shall take yours. As long as the hollow remains, I shall watch you rot."
