The headset display flickered. The forest was gone. He was back in the main menu, but the menu background had changed. It was no longer the village square.
He saw his own body, lying on the floor, the headset strapped to his face. He saw the back of his own head. The camera angle was third-person now, floating in the corner of his ceiling.
Elias transferred it to his headset via SideQuest. His fingers trembled slightly as he slipped the visor over his eyes. The default white grid room of the OS loaded. He navigated to his "Unknown Sources" library and selected the icon.
He was standing in a forest. But he wasn't looking at a screen. He could smell the damp pine needles. He could feel the humidity on his skin—a sensation the hardware shouldn't have been able to produce. He looked down. He wasn't wearing Leon Kennedy’s tactical jacket; he was wearing his own clothes, rendered in the game's engine.
