The story opens in 1815. Jean Valjean is released from prison after 19 years (5 for stealing bread, 14 for escape attempts). He is hardened, angry, and rejected by society. He finds shelter with Bishop Myriel, who treats him with kindness. When Valjean steals the Bishop’s silver, the Bishop lies to the police to save him, giving Valjean the silver candlesticks and telling him to use the money to become an honest man.
