Miss Rita- Episode 4 - Student-teacher Relations

Rita sits on the edge of her desk. She looks tired. She looks beaten. Jason smiles, sensing victory. JASON > Just change the grade in the system. I’ll walk out of here, and we’re good. Rita reaches for her computer mouse. She clicks a few times. Jason leans over to watch the screen. RITA > You’re right, Jason. I am changing something. She turns the monitor toward him. Rita rounds on him. RITA > What are you doing? JASON > I don’t know what you mean. RITA > Rumors. Chats. telling people I’m tutoring you privately. You are setting me up, Jason. Jason drops the act. The charm evaporates, replaced by something colder, calculating. JASON > I need to pass this year, Rita. My dad will kill me if I lose my scholarship. You’re the hardest teacher in the school. RITA > So you try to ruin my career? If I get fired for "inappropriate relations," do you think that helps your grade? JASON > It doesn't need to go that far. Just... bump my grade. Give me a B. I’ll tell everyone I was joking. That the coffee was just a prank. The rumors die. You keep your job. He steps closer. This isn't flirting anymore. It’s blackmail. JASON (CONT'D) > Student-Teacher relations are fragile, Miss Rita. One wrong move, and *poof*. You’re the bad guy.

When a charming but manipulative student attempts to blur the lines of their professional relationship, Miss Rita must navigate a minefield of rumors, parental pressure, and her own code of ethics. SCENE 1

JASON (17, charismatic, varsity jacket, confident smirk) saunters in late. He doesn't head to his desk. He heads to Rita. JASON > Morning, Miss R. Got you something. He places a steaming cup of artisan coffee on her desk. The class quiets down. This isn't the behavior of a typical slacker. RITA > (Without turning around) > Jason. You’re late. And I don’t accept gifts. Take it to the trash, or drink it yourself. JASON > It’s not a bribe. Just noticed you looked tired at the game Friday. Thought you needed the boost. He leans against her desk. It’s a casual invasion of space. He’s too close. The other students watch like hawks—phones are subtly recording. RITA > (Turns sharply, her voice dropping an octave) > My energy levels are not your concern. Your grade, however, is sitting at a D-minus. Sit. Down. Jason holds her gaze for a beat too long. He smiles, raising his hands in mock surrender. JASON > Just trying to be a good student, Miss Rita. You know I’m your biggest fan. He walks to his seat. He winks at his buddy, TYLER.

It’s not the gradebook. It’s a video file. The classroom security camera footage from the morning. It plays clearly: Jason putting the coffee down, Rita dumping it instantly, and the distance between them. RITA > And I’m also printing this. She holds up a transcript. RITA > I’m recording our conversation right now on my phone. You just confessed to blackmail and extortion of a faculty member. Jason freezes. The color drains from his face. RITA > Student-Teacher relations, Jason? Let me teach you the final lesson. You came to a gunfight with a water pistol. JASON > You... you can't show that to my dad. RITA > I’m not showing it to your dad. I’m showing it to the Principal, the Board, and the varsity coach. You’re not failing because you’re stupid, Jason. You’re failing because you’re lazy and entitled. And now, you’re expelled. Jason stumbles back. RITA > Get out.
