Here is the complete story of the movie : The Setup The story begins in a remote village where a father and daughter live alone. The father dies under mysterious circumstances, and the daughter is subsequently murdered by an unknown assailant. The local police close the case, but the spirit of the daughter begins to haunt the village, seeking revenge. The Family Gathering Twenty-two years later, we are introduced to a joint family in Chennai. The patriarch is the father of three sons: Sivaraman, Sivakumar, and Selvi. Sivaraman is the eldest, married to Lakshmi. Sivakumar is married to Hamsavalli, and Selvi is the youngest son, a mischievous and spirited young man.
The woman in the painting is revealed to be . Twenty-two years ago, Parvathi lived in the village with her father. She was a devout and innocent girl. The three brothers of the current family (Sivaraman, Sivakumar, and the third brother) lusted after her. When she rejected their advances, they conspired to ruin her. The Flashback The brothers and their cronies orchestrated a plan. They murdered Parvathi's father. When Parvathi sought justice, the men cornered her. To escape their molestation and dishonor, Parvathi committed suicide by jumping into a well after vowing to destroy the entire lineage of the family.
The family decides to renovate their ancestral palace (the "Aranmanai") in the village to conduct a family deity festival (Kumbhabhishekam). The entire extended family travels to the village for the ceremony. Selvi (played by Sundar C.) is initially reluctant but joins them. Upon arriving at the palace, strange occurrences begin to happen. A young child in the family speaks in a strange voice, and a tantrik ( occultist) warns the family of a powerful spirit lurking in the palace. The family notices a large painting of a woman in the palace, which the grandfather (the eldest brother of the deceased father) claims is just a fictional character.
Selvi, being skeptical, tries to investigate but is often distracted by his cousins, Latha and Padmini. He falls in love with Latha (played by Trisha). Meanwhile, one by one, the male members of the family and people associated with the palace start dying or getting severely injured in "accidents." The spirit specifically targets the men. Selvi realizes that these are not accidents. He begins to investigate with the help of a bumbling police officer (played by Soori). They discover a hidden room in the palace and uncover the backstory of the painting.
In a final attempt to end the curse, Selvi sets the painting on fire. As the painting burns, the spirit screams in agony. However, the spirit has already possessed the soul of the antagonist. In the end, Selvi manages to defeat the evil force, saving his family and his love interest, Latha. The family realizes their ancestors' sins and seeks forgiveness, finally bringing peace to the Aranmanai.
