We meet her business partner, Boo, through flashbacks. At first, Boo seems like just another eccentric character—a woman who wears overalls and has a strict moral code. But the specter of Boo hangs over every scene in the café. In this first episode, we don't yet know the full tragedy of Boo’s death (an accidental suicide), but we feel the absence. The café is empty, echoing the hole Boo left behind.
Within the first ten minutes, Waller-Bridge brilliantly deconstructs the "unlikeable female character" trope. Fleabag is selfish, she’s broke, and she is accidentally rude to almost everyone she meets. Yet, we root for her. Why? Because she turns to the camera.
Fleabag is alone at a bus stop at night. A man tries to pick her up. She declines. He asks, "Are you okay?"
It is here we see the mask slip. For a second, Fleabag isn't the cool, detached narrator. She is a desperate daughter asking for help from a family that has emotionally checked out. The final scene of 1x1 is perhaps the most devastating four minutes of the entire series.
