From a technical standpoint, this clip is a masterpiece of visual effects. Emmerich has always had a penchant for destroying landmarks (he previously blew up the White House in Independence Day and froze New York in The Day After Tomorrow ), but the destruction of Los Angeles in 2012 is on a different scale. As a standalone clip, the Los Angeles collapse is entertaining and awe-inspiring . It is a benchmark for modern CGI destruction. If you are watching purely for adrenaline and visual splendor, it is a 9/10 experience. If you are looking for grounded storytelling or realistic physics, it is closer to a 5/10. Note: "Top" clips from this film often refer to the sequence where the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts or the tsunami hitting the ark ships at the end of the film, but the LA collapse remains the most iconic representation of the movie's scale.
