The game follows the story of a high school called Hope's Peak Academy, which is known for its talented students, known as "Ultimates." The story revolves around the protagonist, a transfer student who becomes trapped in the school along with 15 other students and a robotic bear named Monokuma. Monokuma declares that the only way to escape the school is to murder another student and get away with it, setting off a series of events and trials.
