This paper aims to systematize the most critical of these errors. Drawing upon Error Analysis (Corder, 1967) and Contrastive Analysis hypotheses, we examine the "Top 10" swap errors. These specific pairs have been selected based on their frequency of occurrence in student writing and the severity of the communication breakdown they cause. The data for this qualitative analysis was derived from a corpus of written assignments collected from B1-B2 level Czech students of English over a period of two academic semesters. This paper investigates the phenomenon of lexical interference, specifically "word swaps," in the acquisition of English by native Czech speakers. While phonological and orthographic similarities often facilitate vocabulary acquisition, they simultaneously precipitate errors known as "false friends" (false cognates). This study identifies and analyzes the top ten most frequent and semantically significant word swaps encountered in English-Czech translation. By categorizing these errors into semantic, syntactic, and pragmatic domains, the research highlights the cognitive mechanisms underlying L1 interference. The findings suggest that while some swaps result in mere semantic shifts, others lead to pragmatic failure and communicative breakdown.
