The earth cracks open, and a beautiful but decaying woman in a bridal gown rises up. She introduces herself as , the Corpse Bride . She is overjoyed, believing she has finally found a husband. She drags Victor down into the underworld—a colorful, vibrant land of the dead.
However, the trouble begins during the wedding rehearsal. Victor is so nervous that he forgets his vows and accidentally sets the dress of his future mother-in-law on fire. The pastor, Pastor Galswells, is furious and cancels the wedding, telling Victor he must learn his vows perfectly before he can marry Victoria.
Meanwhile, in the underworld, Emily learns that Victor is in love with Victoria. She is sad but understands that true love cannot be forced. However, a wise old skeleton tells Victor that because he is alive and Emily is dead, their marriage is not valid. For the marriage to be permanent, Victor must die—meaning he must repeat his vows and drink "Wine of Ages" (poison) to join Emily forever.
Heartbroken and scared, Victor runs into the dark, snowy woods to practice his vows alone. He stands near a withered old tree stump. She turns into hundreds of butterflies that fly up into the night sky, finally finding peace (Moksha). Victor and Victoria watch her go, and they live happily ever after, appreciating life and love more than ever before. This movie is a masterpiece of animation by Tim Burton.
