Abstract This paper examines the circumstances surrounding the widespread perception of Adobe Illustrator CS2 as "free software" ("gratuit") following Adobe’s server deactivation in 2012. It analyzes the technical necessity of the released serial numbers, clarifies the legal standing of the software license, and discusses the security risks associated with using legacy software in a modern computing environment. 1. Introduction Adobe Illustrator CS2 (Creative Suite 2), released in 2005, was a pivotal version of the vector graphics editor. In January 2013, Adobe made headlines by disabling the activation servers for CS2 products. To ensure that legitimate paying customers could continue to use the software they had purchased, Adobe publicly released a version of the software alongside universal serial numbers. This action was widely misinterpreted by the internet community as Adobe giving away the software for free. This paper addresses the reality of this situation, specifically for users seeking the French language version. 2. The "Gratuit" Misconception When Adobe shut down the activation servers for CS2, they faced a problem: legitimate users could no longer activate their software on new machines.
